Some of you have asked about how the other canine kids are reacting to the puppies. I mentioned in an earlier post that Ridge was nonchalant; Kenya, Tuc, and Chessie were somewhat interested, but no more interested in litter noises than, say, a passing squirrel; Pinot, I said, was fascinated.
Fascinated, I've since learned, is the understatement of the year. She's obsessed. She would stand at that half-wall and stare at those puppies 24/7 if we let her.
Here's a video capturing her focus. The only break in her attention happens early on when I bump the gate and she looks for a way to get around the wall through that gate. After that, her gaze is unmoving and fixed on the puppies.
We knew she could focus and that she had a great attention span (that's part of what makes her an excellent retriever). But, oh my, I guess never realized just how great.

I wonder why she is so obsessed, do you have any idea as to why?

ReplyDelete1. She was whelped in the very same spot 3.5 years ago.
2. She's Elsie's daughter, so she might have a really strong mothering instinct like Elsie does (that's common).
Kenya, who did not have the same mothering drive as Elsie, whelped Chessie in the same spot a year ago, and Chessie seems unfazed. I think it's that Pinot has a strong mothering drive like Elsie.
I'm not sure why else, but she was this way with Kenya's litter last year, too.
